Departure Mirror is a quarterly of speculative fiction, that is to say fiction where some aspect of reality is altered in a way that casts light on our reality. That can be science fiction, fantasy, alt-history, magical realism, or slipstream. We’re targeting a mainstream audience. While craft matters, if a story requires readers to have an English degree for surface-level understanding or a deep knowledge of the genre’s canon to appreciate it, it’s probably not a good fit here.
We particularly like stories that show developed characters doing the right thing. We do not shy away from “issue” stories, but we’re not fond of anything overtly didactic. We’re most excited by stories that tap into the current cultural zeitgeist.
