Here at the Jenny, no genre is off limits. We believe good writing is good writing. That being said, we strongly discourage gratuitous anything—sex, violence, profanity—just for the sake of trying to be “edgy.” We understand that these elements are often essential to a writer’s vision, but if they do not serve any purpose other than shock value, your piece is likely to be rejected. We strive to publish works of substance. And if this seems vague and subjective, that’s because it is. Substance can be achieved in a number of ways—through poignant themes, dialogue, character development, strong and nuanced prose, the list goes on—and we’re not in the business of dictating how you achieve substance in your work. We just want it to engage us.
