Golgonooza Magazine is a new venture from our artistic collective dedicated to the exploration and innovation of The Weird as an artistic philosophy. We are seeking submissions of previously unpublished fiction, poetry, essays, and visual art that summon the speculative, the horrible and marvelous, the numinous, and the strange for our first issue. We are also open to any other medium that could feasibly be published on a website! If your work squirms away from category, peels at the cracks in the surface of the world or sleeps deeply with unseen things, consider submitting to Golgonooza Magazine.

The weird is not limited to either of these movements—it is often defined precisely by the numerous genres and traditions it combines, embraces, and exists at the peripheries of. Fantasy, science fiction, horror, surrealism, slipstream, fantastique, absurdism, magical realism, folklore, Gothicism, Decadent writing, and Romanticism intermingle within and stand adjacent to the weird. All assortment of dealings with the simultaneously frightening and enticing, incomprehensible, uncertain, and/or Other—Divine, Infernal, or neither—find an essence of weird in them. It is an imaginative force present in many kinds of literature and art.

The elusive genre label of "weird fiction" has its origins in the late 19th and early 20th century, often attributed to writers including H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, and Robert Chambers. At the turn of the 21st century, the weird found a resurgence in the New Weird, a genre label often applied to figures like Jeff VanderMeer, China Mi?ville, and Thomas Ligotti.
